But despite a relatively strong economy, the true story tells we are also on top of the list of countries experiencing stress and depression, with mental health statistics continuing to climb – with 50% of Australians experiencing a serious mental health episode in their lifetime, and one in five suffering a mental disorder in any one year. I work with people all the time who think money and security will make us happy.

But are all those plasma TV’s really making us happy??

It appears not.

 

In my experience, what REALLY makes us happy is:

–       Meaningful relationships

–       A feeling of satisfaction in our work – that we are doing something meaningful to contribute to our company and to society

–       A feeling of freedom of choice in our lives”

 

I recommends five main strategies to her clients to help them feel happier, without changing their physical circumstances whatsoever.

1.       Focus on those things that you DO have rather than those things you don’t. This includes not comparing yourself and being jealous toward those people who seem “better off” than you. Start a gratitude journal where you write down 3 things before you go to sleep each night that you can be thankful for.

2.      Find meaning in your work. Even menial jobs have a hidden contribution to society if you look closely enough

3.      Have more FUN & laugh! Reconnect with a hobby, music, something you LOVE to do and make a commitment to do it regularly!

4.      Don’t wait until you’ve achieved all your goals in order to feel happy (ever said, “I’ll be happy when…”) – be happy as you go about pursuing your goals.

5.      Quit worrying about what might happen. The media is full of doom and gloom about the future. Turn the TV off and remind yourself that 96% of things we worry about NEVER HAPPEN!

These five steps, although simple, can be extremely powerful in building happiness.
